Replacing Old Water Lines

Trenchless water line replacement is an effective way to install waterlines across anyone’s property without disturbing the landscape for creating trenches where potential utilities can break. As a leading trenchless sewer line replacement company, we have seen that the number one reason why water line replacements are common in our area has a lot to do with pipes installed many years ago.

Galvanized Pipe

This is the most common pipe you will find from the front of the house to the water meter or to the sidewalk. Galvanized pipes needs replacement for one reason, they have a life span of about 40 years which within those 40 years the inside of it becomes rusted resulting in diminishing water pressure. Mineral deposits are the most common problem with this galvanized pipes. When it gets old galvanize pipes break from the inside out. Sometimes the soil is very damp around the pipe causing damage and eventually causing a failure. A good way to know when to replace the main water line is when the exposed galvanized pipe  shows a dark brown color in the pipe itself and flaking off pieces of metal. A good way to check  is to dig around and under the dirt level by the main shutoff valve. Freedom Underground Estimates can go to your house or commercial business and check the condition and advise whether or not this line needs replacement.

Copper Pipes

This pipe is the most common pipe found inside your home, however once in a while you will find copper to be installed underground. Copper pipes frequently falls under water line repair instead of replacement because the line can be easily changed or repaired. Typical problems occur when joints are not soldered correctly and combined with pressure and age causing a failure to the copper pipe. Sometimes when the water has too much minerals, it can also be affected from the inside out. Freedom Underground Estimates always recommends to replace your main water line with plastic or HDPE which is noncorrosive and has a lifespan longer than metal.

The most common way for water line replacement will be to use pneumatic bore technology, which can install a new water line for distances up to 50 feet. The system is the most common in the Bay Area, since most properties have their main water supply in front of their houses. These method can replace or install new waterlines up to 3 to 4 feet in diameter. For distances longer than 50 feet, we recommend other technologies for trenchless water line replacement.

The second most effective way to install the new water line, will be to use directional drill technology, which is recommended for waterlines that are located far away from front of the house and are located in places where properties share easements and difficult terrains. Freedom Underground Estimates always recommends to have the property checked first before recommending this system because you want to make sure, that you are not intruding in someone else’s property. Directional drill technology is also great in mountainous areas where the soil is very tough and difficult to navigate.
